What size is a queen fitted sheet?

A standard Australian queen fitted sheet is designed to fit a mattress measuring approximately 153 x 203cm (60 x 80 inches). Most queen fitted sheets are made with elasticised edges and pocket depths that suit mattresses between 35cm and 50cm deep. If you have a thicker mattress or use a topper, choosing a deep pocket queen fitted sheet will help ensure a secure and snug fit. As sizing can vary slightly between brands, it’s always best to check product dimensions before purchasing to make sure your queen size fitted sheet fits properly.

How do you fold a queen size fitted sheet?

Folding a queen fitted sheet is easier when you start by tucking the elasticised corners into each other. Hold the sheet lengthways with your hands inside two corners, then fold one corner over the other to create a layered shape. Bring the remaining corners together and tuck them in to form a rectangle. Lay the queen size fitted sheet flat, smooth out any creases, then fold it into thirds lengthways and again widthways to create a neat, compact square. This method helps manage the elastic edges and makes storing your fitted sheet in a linen cupboard much easier.

What is the best thread count for queen sheets?

The best thread count for queen fitted sheets typically falls between 300 and 600, offering an ideal balance of softness, breathability and durability. Cotton queen sheets within this range feel smooth and comfortable without trapping too much heat. While higher thread counts may feel more luxurious, they can be less breathable. It’s also important to consider fabric quality, as long-staple cotton often performs better than higher thread count sheets made from lower-quality fibres. For bamboo or lyocell queen fitted sheets, thread count is less important because these materials are naturally soft and breathable.

Should a fitted sheet be the same size as a mattress?

A queen fitted sheet should match the length and width of your mattress, which is typically 153 x 203cm in Australia, but the pocket depth should be slightly deeper than the mattress itself. This allows the elasticised edges of the fitted sheet to wrap securely underneath and stay in place. If your mattress is deeper or includes a topper, choose a queen size fitted sheet with extra depth to accommodate the added height. A properly fitted sheet will stay smooth and secure, while one that is too shallow may slip off during the night.
