How often should I replace my bedding?

It’s a question you might often wonder, but not always want to know the answer to: How often should I replace my pillows, quilt, sheets and mattress?

While your beloved bed may feel comfortable, if you’re not replacing pillows or bedding frequently enough, in between the layers of softness could be teaming with bacteria, dust mites and dirt.

Here we’ve given you some simple guidelines to follow, to ensure you’re changing your bedding at the right time, making your sleep sanctuary as clean and healthy as possible.

How often should I replace my pillows?

It’s not pleasant to think about, but your pillow, where you lay your face every night, can play host to a build-up of critters, like dust mites, and debris, like dirt, oil and dead skin cells. Therefore, regular washing, and knowing when to replace your pillow is important to avoid health concerns like allergic reactions or acne breakouts.

As a general rule, change your pillow every two years, or sooner when it stops providing you adequate support.

There are also a few things you can do to increase the lifespan and hygiene of your pillow. Covering your pillow in a zippered pillow protector, like the Allerzip waterproof pillow protector, which should be washed every three weeks, will help with hygiene. Washing your pillow at least twice a year -- just remember to check whether your pillow is machine washable before giving it a spin -- and leaving it exposed to sunlight when you can, will also limit the build up of nasties and growth of bacteria.

How often should I replace my quilt?

Because they don’t hold weight like pillows, replacing quilts, duvets or doonas doesn’t have to be so frequent. A quilt can last up to 15 years, sometimes more, as long as it’s covered and aired regularly. It’s unlikely you’ll remember your 15-year anniversary with your quilt, so keep an eye out for wear and tear like lumping or lack of plumpness as a sign to update it.

How often should I replace my mattress?

Changing your mattress, when it’s passed it hey-day, can greatly improve your quality of sleep. With that in mind, most well-made mattress have a lifespan of about 10 years.

You can improve the longevity of your mattress by rotating it once every few months and flipping it over. A mattress protector is a must to maintain a healthy bed. The Waterproof Mattress Protector, will absorb moisture like sweat and provide dust mite and allergy protection. To give new life to an older mattress, a mattress topper, such as the St Anton Feather Topper, will give extra comfort and support.

How often should I update my sheets?

Sheets should be washed weekly, and like pillows, sheet sets should be tossed and replaced with brand new ones every two years. Some sheets may wear faster and need replacing sooner.

As for choosing the best bed sheets for the comfiest – and healthiest – night’s sleep, bamboo cotton sheets, like the Riley Bamboo Cotton Sheet Set, are the ones. Bamboo cotton has great anti-microbial properties, meaning it's more effective in repelling bacteria, mould and dust mites than normal cotton.
